The Night it Began

She hadn’ t wanted to go out that night. It had been a busy week, inwhich work had been hectic, family had been demanding, and the new moves she was trying to learn at her salsa class had been challenging. But Leana wanted to go out. It was a new venue (or so she thought) a new rave, something different and promised to be just the sort of music she, Leana, wanted to hear. Leana had been complaining all week about the fact that all Juanita wanted to do was to dance salsa and that they never got to go anywhere together anymore.

So reluctantly Juanita had found a cool summer dress ( she really didn’t want to make too much of any effort) some comfortable heels (her feet still ached from her efforts at Thursday nights salsa class), created a hairstyle, very little makeup (because she STILLdidn’t want to make too much effort) and they headed out.

The club wasn’t busy at first. They stood around watching the people coming in and not really paying too much attention to the women in well worn black dresses and shoes they could barely walk in. Juanita and Leana always felt a smug satisfaction that their stints at the gym (or salsa classes in Juanita’s case) had paid off and allowed them to stand, flat-bellied and toned-limbs with tight butts proudly next to their slack bellied peers.

Juanita noticed him first; his white shirt and cream linen trousers. It was his understated but healthy physique which impressed her and the way he didn’t seem to stand still. And his glasses. His glasses made him look like an intellectual, which much later she realised he far from.

The night had barely got started when he came over to tell her that she looked beautiful and if he could dance with her later. She smiled and agreed, barely believing her luck that she had been looking at him and here he was now looking right at her. He took her hand and kissed it and then walked away. Several tunes later he returned to claim her on the dance floor as she pranced around doing her favourite ‘Candy’ dance.

After that they danced, talked, laughed and finally exchanged numbers as he walked her to her car. He said he couldn’t wait to see her again. He looked and sounded smitten and her heart sang.. she hoped he couldn’t hear it.
